There isn’t a phase name, because it wasn’t a phase. It started from a conversation.
Back before Battle Royale was a thing, a couple of us threw together a concept deck for a construction-survival game. Originally called FORTRESS, this ambitious prototype would become better known as FORTNITE.
Lee Perry and I put together the original concept back just prior to a game jam at Epic. Lee had amazing ideas for a construction system. In no time, he had a prototype. A small team formed. We squeezed into a room with folding desks. Suddenly, things were moving.
The Battle Royal juggernaut that now rules so many households would come years later. But back in 2011, there was a room of 8 of us that jumpstarted the Battlebus.
RESULT: The prototype we defined became the platform that launched Fortnite into a billion-player phenomenon - the creative DNA we set remains embedded in its live-service ecosystem today.
