“HISTORY’S GREATEST CONFLICT”
BATTLEFIELD V
ROLE : WAR STORIES DESIGN DIRECTOR
Vision & realisation of Single Player & Game Opening
Creative / Narrative / Design
————
I led the creative, narrative, and design direction of Battlefield V's single-player experience - shaping its structure, tone, and emotional reach. My goal was to evolve the anthology format we pioneered in Battlefield 1 into something more personal and more playable.
The inspiration came from the Forgotten Voices series at the Imperial War Museum - real accounts of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. That lens defined our tone: grounded, human, global. We wanted to move the needle on player freedom while showing the war’s scale through six distinct War Stories, each built around a unique mechanic, tone, and protagonist.
MY COUNTRY CALLING
We needed a partner piece to the opening of Battlefield 1. A “Greatest Hits” album was the working analogy, skipping across time and space to show the breadth and diversity of the conflict, tied together with seamless stage-magic transitions. Mark Strong was kind enough to lend his voice.
NORDLYS
1943: Norwegian ski commandos fight a war of high-speed hit and run against German installations among Scandinavia’s frozen peaks. Play a young Norwegian hunter as she fights not only for her country’s liberation - but her family’s survival.
“Survivorman meets SSX”
UNDER NO FLAG
1942: jump from the deck of a battleship and canoe ashore 500 miles behind enemy lines as one of the first volunteers to join the newly formed SBS - Special Boat Squadron, the little-known twin of the legendary SAS. Bring explosives, dirty tricks and black humour to military operations that tore up the rules on how wars are to be fought.
“Fury Road meets Snatch"
TIRAILLEUR
1944: High-intensity all-out infantry warfare where as French Colonial Forces you fight to liberate the French homeland you have never even seen. As a young Sengelese rifleman, take the point in all-out infantry combat.
“Glory meets The Thin Red Line”
THE LAST TIGER
1945: Command a Tiger I tank in the last stand against the Allied forces before they cross the Rhine. Join a crew ordered to fight to the last man - as they question exactly why they fight - and who the last man might be. Fight a defensive battle without hope in a legendary vehicle that seems like it cannot be destroyed.
“Das Boot meets Black Hawk Down”
The result was a campaign praised for its variety and human focus - expanding Battlefield’s emotional range while preserving its epic scale and player agency.
